The Children's Area of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (SSTM)

Purpose

Shanghai Science and Technology Museum has always been my favourite place in childhood. I still remember the joy of my first visit to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum's children's playground when I was a child. So when I received this job offer, I was thrilled to be able to design a brand new children's space for the place where I spent my childhood and, at the same time, bring the same joy to the kids today. After an intensive discussion with Wintopsh Architecture Studio, I wanted this project to reflect a sense of fun and playfulness. In our teamwork, we have always advocated that the children's playground needs to focus on the children's feelings. Spreading joy and knowledge is the core and pursuit of this proposal.

It was my honor to be engaged in a project for the Children's Area of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (SSTM). My work was responsive to the indoor ground map's 2D graphic design and assistant art direction. Emphasized color theory and narrative storytelling techniques to enhance project impact.

Teamwork

Teamwork was essential in this project, communicating with the interior design department and 3d rendering department through meetings and offline. As the design of the children's ground area combines public environment and interior design, we also participated in the research of Shanghai and other outdoor public squares.

Problems and Solutions

At the beginning of the project, we wanted to combine the area with a childish feel. In the preparation of the program and reference materials, we set the effect as, the world of colorful kids. However, in the visual presentation, there were problems in matching the effect with different areas. Too many detailed elements make the grounds have no point and a sense of wholeness.

So in proposal two, we decided to develop the effect in a simplified and unified direction. The inspiration and conception of the second plan is the load-bearing columns. Take the load-bearing column as the center of the circle, and make concentric circles, and intersect the different circles in the picture. Using the intersection of the faces and circles to divide the different space, simultaneously create a connection between each other.

Choosing a circular pattern is to think this element is full of lively mood. At the same time, different concentric circles can be displayed as orbits. The staggered placement of the circles can make the ground full of artistic fun, in line with the children's joyfulness of playfulness!
